Looking back at last year’s excellence, the National College of Ireland (NCI) has been recognised for its transformative campus expansion at Spencer Dock, winning Best Infrastructure Upgrade at the Education Awards 2025.
The project, which tripled the size of the library and introduced flexible, state-of-the-art learning spaces, exemplifies how forward-thinking infrastructure can enhance student experience, support staff, and set new standards for higher education in Ireland.
NCI was recognised for delivering a refitted-for-purpose building that expanded the library to three times its original size, introduced flexible learning spaces designed to a “best-in-class” specification, and provided state-of-the-art facilities to meet the evolving needs of a growing student body. The project demonstrates a proactive approach to supporting academic excellence, student well-being, and staff engagement through carefully planned and adaptable infrastructure.
Judges praised NCI for its commitment to creating a thoughtfully designed campus environment that enhances the student learning experience while fostering success and community. “This project exemplifies how investment in infrastructure can directly benefit students and staff alike, combining functionality, sustainability, and innovation. NCI has set a new benchmark for future campus developments,” the judges said.
The award reflects broader trends within the Education Awards, where winners increasingly integrate academic excellence with practical, career-focused learning and tangible impact on the student experience.
As attention turns to the 2026 awards cycle, the question arises: which institutions will define the next wave of innovation in campus design and student experience? Entries for the 2026 Education Awards close on 15 January 2026, with finalists announced on 12 February. The gala will take place on 16 April 2026 at the Johnstown Estate, Enfield, Co. Meath.
