The Open University has appointed Michael Bower as Principal and Director of its Ireland operations, effective 30 March 2026, following a competitive recruitment process, as reported by Business Eye.

Bower succeeds John D'Arcy, who has retired after 15 years as Director, and brings more than a decade of senior leadership experience within the organisation to the role.

Currently serving as Deputy Director of Student Success and Strategy, Bower has played a central role in developing strategic partnerships with higher education institutions, employers and government bodies across both Northern Ireland and Ireland.

As Director, Bower will lead the university's operations across the island of Ireland, with a focus on expanding access to flexible higher education, developing research partnerships and strengthening collaboration with industry and the skills sector to address workforce needs.

The Open University supports thousands of students across Ireland each year through flexible distance learning, working closely with employers and policymakers to address skills shortages and create learning opportunities across all career stages.

Bower said he is committed to building on the university's established partnerships and continuing to widen participation in higher education across the island.

The appointment positions the university to deepen its engagement with Ireland's evolving skills and workforce development landscape as demand for flexible, accessible higher education continues to grow.
