The Irish Government has introduced a suite of Further Education and Training micro-qualifications in artificial intelligence, designed to equip workers and enterprises with practical AI capabilities. The programmes form part of SOLAS' Skills to Advance initiative and were launched at Microsoft Ireland, reflecting collaboration between the public sector and industry partners.
According to Silicon Republic, the micro-qualifications deliver targeted training in machine learning fundamentals, ethical AI principles, data analysis and sector-relevant applications. The courses are subsidised and comprise approximately 50 hours of combined tutor-led and self-directed learning.
Delivery is managed through Ireland's 16 Education and Training Boards, offering in-person, online and blended formats. All programmes are accredited by Quality and Qualifications Ireland, leading to Level 5 and 6 Special Purpose Awards on the National Framework of Qualifications.
Minister for Further and Higher Education James Lawless said the launch represents an important step in building confidence and capability around responsible AI use. He noted that the programmes will strengthen digital capacity across businesses of all sizes while enabling employees to advance in their careers.
Dr Kevin Marshall, chair of the National Skills Council and head of future skilling at Microsoft Ireland, emphasised the importance of industry-informed programme design. He stated that AI is reshaping the economy and that these micro-qualifications provide practical, trusted learning aligned with Ireland's long-term skills requirements.
The curriculum includes an introductory course on AI literacy, a productivity-focused module on workplace applications, and forthcoming programmes on legal and ethical considerations under frameworks such as the EU AI Act. A strategic planning course for organisational leaders is also in development.
Nessa White, interim chief executive at SOLAS, said the programmes support enterprises in responding to emerging skills demands while encouraging lifelong learning across a rapidly evolving workforce.
