University of Limerick (UL) has introduced a comprehensive suite of consortia-led executive apprenticeships, spanning Level 7 Diploma to Level 10 Doctorate. The programmes are designed to equip businesses with employees who possess advanced, applied skills while supporting workforce retention and progression.

Executive apprenticeships, once focused mainly on trades, are now increasingly adopted across industries. UL’s programmes integrate academic rigor with real-world workplace application, giving apprentices the opportunity to develop knowledge directly relevant to their current roles. Employers benefit from a structured approach to upskilling that strengthens in-house talent without disrupting daily operations.

Developed in collaboration with industry partners, UL’s apprenticeships reflect extensive consultation on curriculum, ensuring alignment with sector-specific skill requirements. The programmes employ a 70:30 on-the-job to off-the-job learning ratio, incorporating blended and online delivery for maximum flexibility. Participants are also supported by in-company mentors who collaborate with UL resources to facilitate learning and application.

Michael Hennessy, Professional Education Manager at UL, highlighted that the apprenticeships provide a “powerful way to address skills gaps without disrupting day-to-day operations.” Apprentices bring fresh ideas, advanced techniques, and applied knowledge into the workplace, helping businesses remain competitive amid evolving market demands.

The benefits for employers are multifaceted. Programmes allow companies to address current and anticipated skills shortages, foster professional development, and identify future leaders early. Nicola O’Connell, talent management lead at TE Connectivity, noted that UL’s executive apprenticeships have become integral to the company’s learning strategy, offering structured progression while filling essential skill needs.

Apprentices gain exposure to industry-leading practices, technological developments, and business knowledge, supporting innovation, productivity, and competitiveness in the context of Industry 4.0 and emerging Industry 5.0 standards.
