Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) has taken a central role in launching Ireland’s first all-island Accounting Technologist Apprenticeship, a programme developed with Accounting Technicians Ireland (ATI) and The Open University in Northern Ireland.
The initiative was officially launched at Iveagh House by Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Tánaiste Simon Harris, Minister James Lawless, and Dr Caoimhe Archibald, Minister for the Economy in Northern Ireland. The programme defines a new role — the Accounting Technologist — designed to bridge traditional accounting expertise with digital transformation in organisations.
Graduates will earn a BSc (Hons) in Accounting Technology, validated at Level 8 by TUS and Level 6 by The Open University, ensuring recognition and mobility across both jurisdictions. The first cohort of 24 apprentices began in September 2025, following an induction at the Athlone Campus.
The apprenticeship combines classroom learning, employer mentorship, and digital study to develop skills in data analytics, cybersecurity, information systems management, and AI-driven decision-making. It equips learners to support organisations in implementing ESG reporting, digital transformation, and data-driven strategies.
Professor Vincent Cunnane, President of TUS, said the programme reflects the university’s long-standing commitment to connecting higher education with industry and preparing graduates for a rapidly changing accounting profession.
Government leaders highlighted the apprenticeship’s importance in cross-border collaboration and workforce development. Dr Caoimhe Archibald emphasised its relevance to AI adoption, sustainability reporting, and modern accounting demands, while Gillian Doherty, COO of ATI, noted the programme’s alignment with ESG, digital transformation, and emerging finance sector skills.
The apprenticeship sets a precedent for cross-jurisdictional skills development, preparing finance professionals to lead in a digital, sustainable, and data-driven environment.
