Google has announced an ₹85 crore (€9.35m) grant to Wadhwani AI to modernise India’s public learning infrastructure by embedding artificial intelligence into widely used government-owned platforms. The initiative, delivered through Google.org, targets large-scale system upgrades rather than standalone tools, with the ambition of reaching 75 million learners and 1.8 million educators by December 2027.

An article by Business Today reported that India-based Wadhwani AI works with public sector institutions to apply advanced technologies to social systems. Under this programme, AI capabilities will be integrated into platforms such as SWAYAM, the national online learning portal, and the POSHAN Tracker, which supports child development through health and nutrition monitoring.

The approach is designed to enhance services already used daily by millions, rather than introducing parallel digital ecosystems.

The deployment will span early years through to vocational pathways, using AI to personalise support at different stages. Planned applications include voice-based tools to help younger learners build oral reading fluency across ten Indian languages, alongside AI-powered English language coaching for students and early-career professionals.

Google’s core tools, including Gemini and Google Classroom, will also be made available in multiple Indian languages to extend accessibility beyond major urban centres.

Preeti Lobana, VP and country manager, Google India, said: “We are energised by the opportunity to scale this impact. By combining the human connection of teaching with research-backed AI principles in learning, we are helping build a future where every learner in India, regardless of their language or location, has the opportunity to reach their full potential”.

The funding aligns with Google’s broader work in India, which includes collaboration with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship to launch the country’s first AI-enabled university at Chaudhary Charan Singh University.
