US-based online learning platform Coursera has renewed its national partnership with Kazakhstan's Ministry of Science and Higher Education, extending the rollout of for-credit digital learning and AI skills training across the country's university system, as reported by Edtech Innovation Hub.

The initiative, delivered through Coursera for Campus, integrates industry-recognised courses directly into degree pathways, allowing students to earn transferable ECTS credits in areas including data science, cybersecurity, AI, engineering and finance.

Since launching in 2022, the programme has expanded from 25 institutions to 95 universities by 2025, reaching more than 235,000 students. Universities have access to more than 13,500 courses from over 375 partners, with a growing emphasis on generative AI through more than 1,100 GenAI-specific courses.

The renewed agreement supports Kazakhstan's AI-Sana initiative, which positions AI literacy as a baseline requirement for all graduates regardless of field of study. More than 4,000 courses have also been translated into Kazakh using machine learning to broaden access to technical content in the national language.

Anthony Salcito, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Enterprise at Coursera, said Kazakhstan's approach has produced measurable outcomes. "Kazakhstan's bold higher education strategy has already established it as a pioneer in for-credit, skills-first learning," he said, noting that Coursera's latest Global Skills Report ranks Kazakhstan 37th globally for overall skill proficiency, leading the Central Asian region.

Sayasat Nurbek, Minister of Science and Higher Education, said governments require deeper structural responses to AI-driven labour market change, describing the need for institutional capacity to fundamentally shift workforce skill sets rather than rely on short-term training interventions alone.
