Kilkenny and Carlow Education and Training Board (KCETB), in collaboration with Accounting Technicians Ireland (ATI), has unveiled a two-year accounting technician apprenticeship at Carlow Institute of Further Education and Training. The programme combines classroom learning with practical workplace experience to equip apprentices with professional accounting skills.

Seventeen apprentices from local companies began the programme in September, attending one day per week at the Institute while gaining on-the-job experience. Participants will work toward a QQI Level 6 qualification, providing a direct pathway into accounting and related professions.

KCETB Chief Executive Dr Lindsay Malone highlighted that the apprenticeship addresses specific regional skills gaps, particularly in the South East, where small and medium-sized enterprises rely heavily on qualified accounting professionals for finance, payroll, and compliance management. The initiative aligns with broader economic goals by fostering a pipeline of skilled talent capable of supporting local businesses and attracting investment.

Employers and apprentices attended the official launch, demonstrating strong local engagement and collaboration. The programme reflects a strategic approach to vocational education, combining academic instruction with industry exposure to accelerate professional readiness and meet labour market demand.

This launch marks a continuation of KCETB’s expansion of apprenticeship and skills training, supporting workforce development across Carlow, Kilkenny, and the wider South East region. By linking education with practical business needs, the initiative reinforces regional economic growth while providing tangible career opportunities for young professionals.
