Anthology Inc., a US education software company, has named Matthew Pittinsky, current CEO of Parchment, as executive chairman following its Chapter 11 bankruptcy process.

Pittinsky, also co-founder and former CEO of Blackboard Inc., will guide the reorganized company as it restructures its operations.

The appointment comes after lenders taking ownership of Anthology as part of the bankruptcy reorganisation selected Pittinsky to oversee the transition. Under the process, Ellucian will acquire Anthology’s student information systems (SIS) business, while Encoura, backed by Nexus Capital Management, will take control of the company’s lifecycle engagement and student success divisions.

The reorganisation will centre on Anthology’s teaching and learning segment, which will be rebranded as Blackboard upon emergence. Pittinsky’s responsibilities on the board will commence after a standard transition period following his departure from Instructure, the parent company of Parchment.

Anthology’s restructuring aims to streamline operations across its education technology portfolio while retaining focus on delivering student-centric software solutions. The move also reflects a broader trend in the US EdTech sector, where consolidation and leadership realignment are common strategies for post-bankruptcy recovery and market stability.

Pittinsky’s experience with Blackboard and Parchment positions him to integrate business strategy with technology development, potentially enhancing product offerings across SIS and student engagement platforms. Anthology’s restructuring will also influence partnerships and client relations as the company stabilises its service delivery to schools, colleges, and higher education institutions.

The company expects the rebranding to Blackboard to strengthen its identity in the EdTech market while signalling a clear focus on teaching and learning solutions. The divestment of non-core assets to Ellucian and Encoura will allow Anthology to concentrate resources on innovation and scalability in student information management and digital learning tools.
